Not a scrape of the top-rated list. These are the places we go ourselves, with an honest note on how far each one is from the front door.
The Tirana counter from the family behind the famous agriturism up north. Nothing to book and no menu to study: you queue, pay at the counter, and get a sandwich of meat and melted cheese made from their own farm's produce, then eat it in the courtyard. There is usually a line at lunch. It is worth it.
The Albanian answer to a bakery lunch, five minutes away. Byrek is flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach, meat or pumpkin, sold by the slice from about fifty cents and eaten standing up. Order it the way Albanians do — byrek me dhallë, with a cold glass of salted drinking yoghurt, much like ayran. Luani does it properly, and this is the cheapest good food near the apartment, full stop.
Paçe, paidhaqe, grilled lamb chops — the traditional Albanian meat tavern, at prices that have nothing to do with the tourist centre. No ceremony, plastic tablecloths, excellent food.
Home cooking of the kind Albanian families actually eat, served fast and priced for locals. Point at what looks good behind the counter. A full lunch here costs less than a cocktail in Blloku.
Widely called the best fine dining in Albania, on the third and fourth floors of a hundred-year-old building. The rooftop is French in spirit and has the whole city underneath it. This is where you go for the evening you will still be talking about at home.
A proper steakhouse on the fourth floor of the Aba Business Center, with prime cuts, seafood and a bar that keeps going after the plates are cleared. Weekend brunch is a good idea. Come for sunset and stay longer than you planned.
Our nearest real night out, and the one every guide gets wrong: Tunel is on Rruga Ludovik Shllaku, about four hundred metres from our door — not out in Blloku. Local and visiting DJs, techno through to pop depending on the night, and a terrace upstairs if you need to hear yourself think.
The owner is a butcher, and it shows. Some of the best cuts in Tirana, plus handmade pasta and a serious wine list. Go for the tartare or the fiorentina.
Tirana's most inventive cocktail bar since 2012, and the only one to make the World's 50 Best Bars list. Dim, warm, a little theatrical — exactly what a nightcap should be.
The restored New Bazaar: produce stalls ringed by grill houses, byrek counters and cafes. The easiest good meal near the apartment, and the best place to see how the city actually eats.
A tiny, low-ceilinged house hung with kilims, serving the dishes Albanian grandmothers make. Order the tavë kosi and the stuffed peppers.
Bledar Kola cooks behind a working flour mill at the edge of the Grand Park. Ambitious, rooted, and still unmistakably Albanian.
Not one bar but about ten of them, packed into two hundred metres of side street behind the Pyramid— Meduza's Irish pub, City Art Café and a row of terraces. Walk down it and pick whichever one sounds right.
An underground room out by the artificial lake, and the most serious electronic booking in the city— proper techno and house, international guests, and a phones-down rule on the floor that makes the whole night better. Late, and not for a quiet drink.
Blloku, busy, and unapologetically fun. Hip hop and Balkan hits, a young crowd and a bar that fills up early by Tirana standards. A good first stop rather than a last one.
The Blloku club for afro house and afrobeats — big sound, good energy, and the one to pick when you want to dance to something other than techno.
Albanian and Balkan music, bottle service and tables you reserve rather than a floor you squeeze onto. This is how a lot of Tirana actually goes out — book a table, order a bottle, stay until it is light.
A communist-era living room turned bar: Bakelite radios, enamel signs, and a long list of home-made raki by flavour. Cosy in the most specific possible way.
Small, warm and lined with old valve radios. Good drinks, low volume, easy conversation — the antidote to a loud night.
There are two Eras and it matters which one you pick. The Blloku branch is perfectly good, but Era Vila — a restored 1940s villa with a garden hidden behind it — is the one to book. Same kitchen, same twenty-five years of getting it right, far better evening.
Contemporary cooking in a bright room, strong on vegetables and natural wine. The best option when you have had enough grilled meat.
The revolving bar on top of the Sky Tower. Come for sunset, one drink, and the whole city turning slowly below you.
The neighbourhood chain Albanians actually drink at. A macchiato costs about a euro and comes with a glass of water and no rush.
The one you will actually use: four minutes away and open around the clock. Everything for breakfast, cold beer at one in the morning, and no reason to plan ahead.
Closer than you would expect — about a hundred metres — but bigger, Italian and noticeably pricier. Go for a specific brand from home or a proper wine shelf. For everyday things and for anything after midnight, Big Piaza is cheaper and never shuts.
Two minutes from the door, and the reason you should not change money at the airport or at home. Central Tirana exchange offices give noticeably better rates than either, with no commission worth mentioning. Bring euros in cash; you will get lek at a rate you can check on your phone first.
Opening hours and bookings change — for the busier places, message us a day or two ahead and we will call and reserve a table for you in Albanian. It genuinely helps.
